Nürnberg is a classic old-school German football city. It is proud, loud, and completely devoted to its club. The Max-Morlock-Stadion is not a shiny modern arena. Instead, it is a concrete bowl filled with noise, history, and real character. If you enjoy away days with genuine atmosphere rather than corporate polish, this one is excellent.
1. Stadium Overview
The stadium is called Max-Morlock-Stadion and holds around 50,000 fans. It sits in the pleasant Dutzendteich park area in south-east Nürnberg. Home supporters, known as Die Legende, are passionate, vocal, and extremely loyal. The overall vibe is traditional German football with plenty of flags, drums, and a strong terrace atmosphere.
Matchdays here feel like a festival. The stadium is surrounded by parkland, so fans walk in from every direction past beer stalls and the smell of grilling bratwurst drifting through the trees.
2. Away Fans Area
Away supporters are placed in the south-east corner, usually in blocks 25 to 27 depending on the allocation.
You can expect excellent sightlines thanks to the steep rake and lack of pillars. Segregation is well managed but not overly hostile. German away fans often stand, while UK visitors are typically given seated sections. The concourse is spacious with quick beer service, and you are allowed to drink in the stands. The atmosphere is loud, with Nürnberg ultras in the opposite corner driving the noise throughout the match.

3. Getting to the Stadium
The best way is by public transport. Take the U1 U-Bahn to Frankenstadion station, followed by a pleasant 10 to 12 minute walk through the park. On matchdays, trains run frequently. The S2 S-Bahn to Nürnberg Frankenstadion drops you even closer.
Taxis are cheap and straightforward from the Altstadt and will drop you near the main park entrance. Driving is not recommended. Parking is available but fills up early, and the single-exit roads create heavy traffic after the game.
4. Pre-Match Drinks
Nürnberg is one of the best cities for pre-match beers. The Altstadt (Old Town) is the ideal base for away fans. It is safe, lively, walkable, and only a short U-Bahn ride from the stadium.
Recommended pubs include Hausbrauerei Altstadthof for authentic local red beer and a genuine Franconian atmosphere. Barfüßer is big and loud, making it perfect for groups of away fans. O’Sheas Irish Pub is English-friendly and often shows football on TV.
Near the stadium itself, the park has beer tents and bratwurst stands. It creates a relaxed, typically German pre-match scene where fans stand around enjoying a beer in the open air.
5. Food and Drink Inside the Stadium
This is one area where Nürnberg really stands out. Try the famous Nürnberger Rostbratwurst, three small sausages served in a bun. Pair them with cold, affordable Franken beer. Giant pretzels are also widely available. Cashless payments are accepted everywhere, and overall prices are very reasonable compared to bigger Bundesliga clubs.
6. Tickets
Tickets for FC Nürnberg matches are usually easy to obtain unless it is a local derby or a key promotion game. Away allocations tend to be generous for European ties or friendlies. Expect to pay between 20 and 40 euros depending on the section. The club is generally fan-friendly and does not use aggressive dynamic pricing.

The Altstadt (Old Town) is the best location for most away fans. It offers easy access to bars, restaurants, and a great atmosphere. Südstadt is a solid budget alternative that is still safe and convenient. Areas around the main train station can feel a bit sketchy late at night, but overall the city is welcoming.

Nürnberg fans are passionate and noisy but not generally hostile toward visitors who show respect. You will experience flags, drums, and a proper old-school German football atmosphere. Police presence is noticeable but relaxed, and away fans are escorted through the park in an organised yet friendly way.

FC Nürnberg is one of Germany’s most historic clubs. The stadium has real character instead of modern corporate feel. The city offers brilliant beer and food culture, and the park setting around the ground is unique in Europe. The fanbase lives and breathes football, creating an authentic matchday experience.

This fixture feels more old-school than trips to Leipzig or Hoffenheim. It is less intense than Frankfurt or Dresden but offers better food and beer than most grounds. You will find more character here than at Wolfsburg or Leverkusen, and it is generally more relaxed than Hamburg or Cologne.
